Apple (AAPL) Halves iPhone 5 Part Orders Due to Week Demand: Report

The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Apple (AAPL) has cut in half its orders for the iPhone 5?s 4-inch screen in the current quarter due to ?weaker-than-expected-demand?. The iPhone maker also reportedly trimmed component orders for other screen sizes as well, a move which seems to suggest that sales of the iPhone line, in the face of strong competition from Samsung and Google (GOOG), haven?t been as strong as previously anticipated.

?Apple?s orders for iPhone 5 screens for the January-March quarter, for example, have dropped to roughly half of what the company had previously planned to order,? two people familiar with the situation told the Journal.

?The Cupertino, Calif., company has also cut orders for components other than screens, according to one of the people.

Apple notified the suppliers of the order cut last month, the people said.?

The WSJ report is joined by a similar article from the Nikkei, Japan?s largest business newspaper, which claims that Apple?s original order of 65 million units in the quarter is being significantly reduced. Sources say Japan Display?s plant, where Apple has invested heavily, is expected to temporarily reduce output by 70% to 80% compared to the October ? December period. Sharp?s dedicated facility for iPhone 5 LCD panels production is also expected to be down by around 40% from?its October to December level.

It?s worth noting that it?s not that unusual for iPhone demand to start waning at the 6 month mark, especially after Xmas. That said, it remains to be seen whether Cupertino?s reduction is related to the ongoing rumors of a cheaper model introduction to the iPhone line sometime in fiscal 2013.

Apple is set to report Q1FY13 earnings on January 23, so we?ll hopefully get a better idea on the state of the iPhone then.

Apple?s stock fell $19.95, or 3.83 percent to $500.35 in premarket trading / 7:11AM EST ? Nasdaq Real Time Price

Ticker?s 52wk range: $419.55 ? $705.07.

Newtown debates future of school where 26 died

NEWTOWN, Conn. (AP) ? A month after a gunman killed 26 people at an elementary school, some Newtown parents say the building should be demolished, while others believe the school should be renovated and the areas where the killings occurred removed.

Talk has turned to the future of the Sandy Hook Elementary School as life slowly begins moving forward in town. Resident at a public meeting Sunday made passionate arguments about whether their kids should ever return to the site of the tragedy.

"I have two children who had everything taken from them," said Audrey Bart, whose children attend the school but weren't injured in the shooting. "The Sandy Hook Elementary School is their school. It is not the world's school. It is not Newtown's school. We cannot pretend it never happened, but I am not prepared to ask my children to run and hide. You can't take away their school."

But fellow Sandy Hook parent Stephanie Carson said she can't imagine ever sending her son back to the building where 20 first-graders and six educators died.

"I know there are children who were there who want to go back," Carson said. "But the reality is, I've been to the new school where the kids are now, and we have to be so careful just walking through the halls. They are still so scared."

The meeting at Newtown High School about the future of Sandy Hook drew about 200 people. A second meeting has been set for Friday. Town officials also are planning private meetings with the victims' families to get their input.

On Monday, the grassroots group Sandy Hook Promise invited victims' family members to a news conference where an initiative to prevent similar tragedies was to be unveiled.

Co-founder Tim Makris said Friday the group, formerly known as Newtown United, does not represent or speak for the families. "We're here to help and support the families when they're ready to move forward," he said.

Although opinions were mixed at Sunday's meeting in Newtown, most agreed that the Sandy Hook children and teachers should stay together. They've been moved to a school building about seven miles away in a neighboring town that has been renamed Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Mergim Bajraliu, a senior at Newtown High School, attended Sandy Hook, and his sister is a fourth-grader there. He said the school should stay as it is, and a memorial for the victims should be built there.

"We have our best childhood memories at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and I don't believe that one psychopath ? who I refuse to name ? should get away with taking away any more than he did on Dec 14," he said.

Police say Adam Lanza, 20, killed his mother at the home they shared in Newtown before opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle at the school and killing himself as police arrived.

Last week, residents around town expressed similar opinions about the school's future.

Susan Gibney, who lives in Sandy Hook, said she purposely doesn't drive by the school because it's too disturbing. She has three children in high school, but they didn't attend Sandy Hook Elementary School. She believes the building should be torn down.

"I wouldn't want to have to send my kids back to that school," said Gibney, 50. "I just don't see how the kids could get over what happened there."

Laurie Badick, of Newtown, whose children attended the school several years ago, said she's torn. "Sandy Hook school meant the world to us before this happened. ... I have my memories in my brain and in my heart, so the actual building, I think the victims need to decide what to do with that."

Fran Bresson, a retired police officer who attended Sandy Hook Elementary School in the 1950s, wants the school to reopen, but he thinks the hallways and classrooms where staff and students were killed should be demolished.

"To tear it down completely would be like saying to evil, 'You've won,'" the 63-year-old Southbury resident said.

Residents of towns where mass shootings occurred have grappled with the same dilemma. Some have renovated, some have demolished.

Columbine High School, where two student gunmen killed 12 schoolmates and a teacher, reopened several months afterward. Crews removed the library, where most of the victims died, and replaced it with an atrium.

On an island in Norway where 69 people ? more than half of them teenagers attending summer camp ? were killed by a gunman in 2011, extensive remodeling is planned. The main building, a cafeteria where 13 of the victims died, will be torn down.

Virginia Tech converted a classroom building where a student gunman killed 30 people in 2007 into a peace studies and violence prevention center.

An Amish community in Pennsylvania tore down the West Nickel Mines Amish School and built a new school a few hundred yards away after a gunman killed five girls there in 2006.

Newtown First Selectwoman E. Patricia Llodra said that in addition to the community meetings, the town is planning private gatherings with the victims' families to talk about the school's future. She said the aim is to finalize a plan by March.

"I think we have to start that conversation now," Llodra said. "It will take many, many months to do any kind of school project. We have very big decisions ahead of us. The goal is to bring our students home as soon as we can."

France: US helping support Mali operation

BAMAKO, Mali (AP) ? France's foreign minister said Sunday that the United States is providing communications and transport help for an international military intervention aimed at wresting Mali's north out of the hands of Islamist extremists.

Laurent Fabius said the three-day-old, French-led military operation has succeeded in halting the extremists' advance, which had prompted the intervention. He sought to stress that the operation is gaining international backing, despite concern about the risks of the mission in a stretch of lawless desert in weakly governed country.

"We have the support of the Americans for communications and transport," Fabius said on RTL radio Sunday. Britain, Denmark, and other European countries also are helping, Fabius said. He gave no details about the backup.

U.S. officials on Saturday said they had offered to send drones to Mali. British Prime Minister David Cameron agreed to send aircraft to help transport troops.

Some 400 French troops have been deployed to Mali in the all-out effort to win back the territory from the well-armed rebels, who seized control of an area larger than France itself following a coup in Mali in March and made new advances last week.

Fabius said the military effort, including airstrikes by jets and combat helicopters on at least four towns, succeeded in blocking the advance.

"The Islamist offensive has been stopped," Fabius said. "Blocking the terrorists ... we've done it."

Residents of the city of Gao confirmed that the targets included the city's airport, as well as the building that served as the base for the town's feared Islamist police, who have carried out numerous punishments including the public amputations of accused thieves. The insurgents adhere to a harsh interpretation of Islamic law.

But the intervention has come with a human cost in the city of Konna, the first to be bombed Friday and Saturday. Mali presidential spokesman Ousmane Sy said 11 Malians were killed. The town's mayor, Sory Diakite, said the dead included three children who threw themselves into a river and drowned trying to avoid the falling bombs.

French President Francois Hollande authorized the military operation, code-named "Serval" for a sub-Saharan wildcat, after it became clear that the advancing rebels could push past defenses in the town of Mopti, the first town on the government-controlled side, which has the largest concentration of Malian soldiers.

The decision catapulted the world and Mali's neighbors into a military operation that diplomats had earlier said would not take place until at least September.

On Saturday, the body representing nations in West Africa announced that they would send hundreds of troops of their own, including at least 500 each from Niger, Burkina Faso and Senegal, as well as from Nigeria.

Samsung Getting Cold Feet On Windows Rt, Ativ Tab Not Headed To The U.s.

> Samsung getting cold feet on Windows RT, ATIV Tab not headed to the U.S. - Photo posted in BX Tech | Sign in and leave a comment below!

It appears that Samsung will not be launching the companies Windows RT tablet, the ATIV Tab, in the U.S. market and the future doesn't look bright for other markets as well.

The reason behind the cold feet? Feedback from Samsung's retail partners indicated demand for Windows RT tablets is modest at best and the investment to sell the importance of Windows RT's benefits was too great.

Mike Abary, Samsung's Senior Vice President over PC and Tablets, stated,

"When we did some tests and studies on how we could go to market with a Windows RT device, we determined there was a lot of heavy lifting we still needed to do to educate the customer on what Windows RT was. And that heavy lifting was going to require pretty heavy investment."

Additionally Samsung looked at the overall price of a Windows RT tablet. Abrary said that Windows RT devices should cost less than those using Windows 8 but there were too many trade offs to bring the price down. For what you pay for the Surface RT, you can just about afford a low-end Ultrabook or mid-range laptop.

Not being able to lower the price without maintaining a useful product, not seeing the demand and the overall marketing cost all together seemed to make the ATIV Tab a bad business decision for Samsung.

In the process, this decision could impact Windows RT overall success. While the Surface RT is a capable tablet, it's not selling like hot cakes. Samsung's concerns have merit and may make it more difficult for Windows RT to succeed. Looking at the positive, Samsung's decision isn't necessarily an indictment against Windows RT and may motivate Microsoft to look into options to lower the cost and make Windows RT devices more attractive to produce and purchase.

I-Team: 22000 Case Backlog To Appeal Insurance Surcharge In Mass.

BOSTON (CBS) ? It happens to everyone ? a fender bender ? and it?s a headache.

But wait until you see what a mess the bureaucracy can really be if you feel you?re being unfairly charged for that accident.

The I-Team found there is a 22,000 case backlog and a nine month wait for motorists who want to appeal to a special state board.

One day, Donna Halper of Quincy was waiting at a red light outside the South Shore Plaza. When it turned green, she started to move forward, but the SUV in front of her did not.

?I don?t know if you could even call it an accident,? Halper said. ?My car tapped another car.?

But what she calls a little bump turned into a big headache.

?I get a notice from my insurance company telling me that I?m going to be surcharged because of the fact that I was in an accident,? Halper said.

The surcharge, an extra $180 a year on her insurance bill, was assessed before she had a chance to tell her side of the story to the board of appeal.

?I?d like to have my day in court,? she said.

But that won?t happen any day soon. This is the voice message Halper heard when she called the state Division of Insurance to file an appeal: ? ?The current backlog of appeals is over 22,000 and the average wait time for a hearing to be scheduled is about nine months.?

?Twenty-two thousand people having to wait for justice? Having to wait to have their case heard for up to nine months, maybe even longer? I was stunned,? Halper said.

The commissioner of the Division of Insurance, Joseph Murphy, admitted there is a problem.

?I appreciate the frustration and we?re working on it,? Murphy said when asked about the enormous backlog of appeals. ?We?re trying to get that down to something more manageable, something we can live with and consumers can live with as well.?

Murphy pointed out that Massachusetts is the only state in the country that allows drivers to appeal surcharges this way.

But that?s small consolation to Halper.

?If I?m going to be charged an extra $180, I?d like to be able to make my case in a timely fashion with the hope that it could be reversed,? she said.

It costs each motorist $50 to appeal a surcharge. That means the current backlog alone adds up to more than $1 million in fees, all of which go directly into the state?s general fund.

The only good news here is that among the people who do finally have their appeals heard, about half win and get the surcharge wiped off their insurance bill.

Lone All-Star State: National college football showcase coming to Allen

Two teams, one stadium and 110 graduating seniors from across the country vying for a chance at the NFL - this is what Texas vs. The Nation is all about.

For six years, the all-star exhibition game has gained a reputation for making many young athletes dreams come true at Sun Bowl Stadium in El Paso and the Alamodome in San Antonio.

This year, the game - which was born from an idea to bring a sense of rivalry and teamwork back to the all-star arena - will be held on Feb. 2 at Eagle Stadium in Allen, an announcement that had many local residents asking, "Why Allen?"

"They have great leadership in that community and the word 'no' doesn't seem to come up in any conversations there," said Kenny Hansmire, CEO of Texas vs. The Nation. "I know I'm in the right area and I know [the city of Allen] is excited about it. The NFL looked at those facilities and said they looked at it as one of the top 10 facilities for both college and NFL in the country, and that's very special."

In 2006, Hansmire said he came up with the concept for the all-star game after having a conversation with sports and communications luminary Red McCombs. According to Hansmire, the sports team mogel asked Hansmire - who, at the time was owner and chairman of the Hula Bowl - why all-star bowl games seemed to be struggling across the country, to which Hansmire said he felt it was due, in part, to regional indifference.

"You can't get behind an east-west or a north-south game, no one knows who to root for," Hansmire said. "Everyone that day - except the parents of the nation side - will be rooting for Texas."

Last season, the game was renamed the NFLPA Game in San Antonio, but was shifted back to the original format this year. The exhibition serves as a stage for professional scouts to evaluate prospects for the NFL, CFL and other pro football leagues, and is similar to college all-star games like the Senior Bowl and East-West Shrine Game.

The showcase attracted roughly 28,000 fans in its first year and boasts roughly 225 scouts and general managers each season, Hansmire said. More than 500 college players who participated in the Texas vs. the Nation game have been signed to NFL contracts since its inception, and more than 100 players have been selected in the NFL Draft.

With a five-year contract to keep the bowl in Allen, Hansmire said he hopes both the national and local communities can draw enough numbers to make it a staple of North Texas football.

"We're very excited. We want Allen to be our hometown for a very long time," he said. "This is the largest contingent of future millionaires that will be in Allen that day. If you didn't have tickets to the Super Bowl, you need to be in Allen."

With potential for celebrity sightings at the game and simply being associated with the level of recognition that the NFL carries, the staff at Eagle Stadium has been proud of the national attention the third largest high school football stadium in Texas has received since opening on Aug. 31 last year, Allen ISD spokesman Tim Carroll said.

While staffing strategies will certainly be formulated between Carroll and stadium manager Jeff Chaney between now and Feb. 2, Carroll said the 18,000-seat facility was made for games like this and is already prepared to handle big crowds.

"We're very privileged to host the event, we're going full guns trying to accommodate them in any way we can," Carroll said. "This is a big deal for Allen because of the exposure Allen gets. (The) NFL's name has recognition all over the world."

Since its first game, which attracted 22,000 people, Eagle Stadium has been highlighted in numerous TV shows and publications nationwide. Serving a student body of 5,300 - the second largest in Texas - the stadium's size and $59.6 cost attracted the initial attention. But it is the comfort and amenities that has carried that attention, which has led it to attract playoff games and bowls like Texas vs. The Nation, Carroll said.

An avid football fan, Carroll said while he enjoys seeing people drive by like tourists to feast their eyes on the facility for the first time, perhaps what has been even more exciting for him has been running into athletes like former Dallas Cowboys Randy White and Bill Bates touring the facility and "kicking the tires."

"I think at first, there was a lot of anxiety from people saying we were never going to fill [Eagle Stadium], but in reality it's full almost every single game," Carroll said. "The stadium is certainly serving its purpose and was made the appropriate size. The buzz brought the people here but the quality is something I feel will bring some longevity to it."

Allen head football coach Tom Westerberg was selected to assist Bates, who will serve as head coach for the Texas team, which leads 3-2 in the series. While his Eagles' recent Class 5A Division I State Championship and longstanding status as a state powerhouse certainly sweetened the deal, Hansmire said Westerberg was selected more for his reputation of creating leaders.

"[Westerberg] wins championships, but what I hear more [about him is that] he builds character with his team, and that's a leader," he said. "When you're building young men to be greater young men, that's what coaching is all about. I've never heard an ill word about him, all I've heard are words like 'honor,' 'integrity,' 'leadership,' and 'humble.'"

Head coach at Allen since 2004, Westerberg said he is looking forward to two things when it comes to fulfilling his role as assistant head coach for the Texas team - seeing a few familiar faces from Allen's alumni and stepping out of his high school-level position to see what they've learned.

"It's just going to be quite an honor and a lot of fun with some of our students coming back," he said. "I'm trying to learn as much as I can from all these guys. Anytime you get around these guys and with the experience they have, you're bound to learn something, as well as learn something from these kids. I'm using this for more of a learning experience than anything."

The Texas vs. The Nation game starts at 1:30 p.m. and will be televised by FOX Sports. For tickets and information, visit texasvsthenation.com.

Montreux Jazz Festival founder Claude Nobs dies

GENEVA (AP) ? Claude Nobs, the founder and general manager of the Montreux Jazz Festival, whose passion for music and artistry introduced generations of legendary musicians to international audiences on the Swiss stage, has died. He was 76.

The Jazz Festival said Nobs, a native of Montreux, died Thursday after sustaining injuries from a fall while cross-country skiing in nearby Caux-sur-Montreux on Christmas Eve. He was taken to the hospital and fell into a coma from which he never recovered.

Nobs worked his way from being a chef and director of Montreux's tourism office, where he organized charity concerts, to overseeing one of the most iconic music festivals in the world.

On its website, the festival said Nobs' death came by "surprise as if to remind us once more, that in life as in music, each great performance could be the last one even if the show must go on."

A visit to the New York offices of Atlantic Records led to the first festival in his home city in June 1967, featuring musicians such as Keith Jarrett and Jack DeJohnette.

The festival was an overnight success, building over the decades on Nobs' passion for jazz, as much as his gumption and contacts abroad.

"'And why not?' You would repeatedly ask the same question when we tried to explain why a project would not be feasible," festival officials wrote in an homage to Nobs on the web site that praised his audacity to dream big. "The Montreux Jazz Festival is the ultimate proof of that! But not the only one!"

From that meeting in New York, Nobs went on to gain career-forming introductions to musical greats such as Roberta Flack and Aretha Franklin, who would make her first European tour at his request. The musical acts at the festival also would gradually broaden to include rock and pop.

An early incident involving the rock group Deep Purple, which had come to Montreux to record an album after performing with Frank Zappa, became forever linked with Nobs.

During a fire at Zappa's concert in 1971, Nobs rushed to save several young concert-goers. Deep Purple's hit song, "Smoke on the Water," would memorialize the accident ? Nobs as "Funky Claude" pulling kids to safety.

Two years later, Nobs became director of the Swiss branch of Warner, Elektra and Atlantic, a position that gave him added clout to introduce heavyweights on the Montreux stage.

By the 1990s, he was sharing festival-directing duties with the music producer Quincy Jones and bringing in Miles Davis as an honorary host.

Nobs, whose enthusiasm for greeting musicians at his office and chalet home cemented his standing and boosted the profile of his home, also became known for occasionally taking the stage to play harmonica.

In an interview with Swiss video magazine NVP3D posted on YouTube, Nobs' compared the mix of tradition and creative innovation that he sought at his festivals to the popular Swiss German breakfast dish Bircher Muesli, a combination of rolled oats, fruits, nuts and dairy products.

"Which means it's going to be like a fruit panorama, like a rainbow of different music, and this is what I like about Montreux," he said in the interview, published in June 2012. "To make it really with such a variety of sound, of smell, of views and scene, that it makes it a real experience."

The Cardiovascular Research Foundation will host scientific meeting on latest breakthroughs and techniques for chronic total occlusions and percutaneous left main interventions

    WHAT:

The agenda for the Chronic Total Occlusion and Left Main Summit has been set and is now available at: http://www.complexpci.com/conference/agenda.html.

The three-day conference will feature state-of-the-art technologies, research findings and new developments in therapeutic procedures essential for interventional cardiologists to optimize success in chronic total coronary occlusions and left main coronary interventions. Topics at this year's summit will include:

    • Fundamentals of CTO PCI
    • Complex Retrograde and Antegrade CTO PCI
    • Updates on Global CTO Registries
    • Left Main PCI: Essential Knowledge
    • Left Main Publications and Abstracts
    • Complication Prevention and Management
    • How to Improve Outcomes
    • Live Case Transmissions
    • Edited Taped Case Presentations

    WHY:

A complete blockage in the coronary artery lasting more than three months, or chronic total occlusion (CTO), has historically been one of the most challenging types of blockages to treat with an interventional procedure. Leading practitioners of percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) must become experts at restoring blood flow for patients with chronic total occlusions, and with advanced techniques, success rates greater than 90% may be obtained.

Stenting of the unprotected left main coronary artery has also emerged as a viable alternative to surgery in selected patients but requires a special skill set and understanding of anatomy, imaging, hemodynamic support, and adjunctive devices.

This year's conference will emphasize both advanced techniques and evidence-based medicine, along with live case transmissions featuring the world's leading experts in left main and CTO stenting.

    WHEN:

    February 21-23, 2013

    WHERE:

    New York Marriott Marquis Hotel
    New York, NY

    HOW TO REGISTER:

Media may apply for registration by emailing jromero@crf.org.

Republican Eric Cantor says he opposes Senate bill

During an oddly jokey statement at the White House as the fiscal deadline bore down Monday afternoon, President Obama said, "I'm going to be president for the next four years. I?hope." He was warning Republicans that, yes, they'd have to deal with him for a while. But it was, to be sure, a strange moment. Could he actually have been joking about assassination? About impeachment? The?apocalypse? Or has everyone just had enough of these negotiations??
