The #1 Fear of a Home Based Business Owner (and What To Do ...

By Tami Gomez

I recently asked over 1,000 of my Social Media friends what their biggest fear is when it comes to starting a home-based business? Some were too afraid to answer (no pun intended) and some jumped at the chance to express their feelings. I found it interesting that those who responded were the ones that had obviously thought about starting their own business at some point, but just couldn?t pull the trigger.

Now being the ?psycho-analyst? that I am, I couldn?t wait to plunge through all of their answers in hopes of discovering a common denominator. It took me a few hours to go through, sort, analyze and compile all of the data but when I lifted my weary head, I had come up with the #1 Fear of a home based business owner (or wanna-be business owner).

Most of you will be able to relate because you?ve been there. I mean what entrepreneur hasn?t faced some fear in their business, right? But here?s what I?m hoping you get out of this article? What to do when fear shows it?s ugly head!

So without further ado, here are the top 2 questions I received and my response to them.

Question #1 ? What if I fail? (Submitted by Theresa Goodwin Hill)

Question #2 ? What if I can?t keep the money coming in? It doesn?t feel safe. (Submitted by Valorie French Stricklin)

Well Theresa and Valorie, those are great questions and questions that almost every beginning business owner thinks about. I know I thought about it A LOT before I took the plunge and dove into the unsettling waters of entrepreneurship. I can?t tell you how many times I?ve heard ?I?d like to start my own business but?.? And this is followed by any number of well-reasoned thoughts ? from the ?timing isn?t right? to ?I don?t know who would buy my product? to ?I doubt I could support myself? to ?my job isn?t that bad right now?. All of those rational thoughts are founded in one thing ? fear, and more specifically?fear of failure.

That?s right. The fear of failure is the #1 thing holding people back from their potential. It?s not talent, or ambition, or ideas that stops budding entrepreneurs. It?s fear that can stop people dead in their tracks. And it?s stopped countless great businesses before they even begin.

People who fear failure learn it?s easier to slide along with the status quo than take that important first step. And certainly watching the nightly news doesn?t exactly help. In a world full of uncertainty and delicate economies, it?s easy to see why people want to play it safe. And it?s incredibly easy to rationalize why you shouldn?t do something risky. But just think of it this way: People who fear failure never take their first step to success.

If fear of failure preventing you from starting a small business or expanding into new markets, consider the following to help you overcome this fear, forge ahead, and achieve your true potential?

Recognize the benefits of failure.

Ralph Waldo Emerson said, ?All life is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better.? In business, like in life, there are valuable lessons to be learned in each failure. Even if a failure costs you short-term financial hardship or embarrassment, the educational benefits can outweigh the loss.

Dive in? (it?ll be okay).

If fear is holding you back, you may need to just jump right in to get started. Take a deep breath and then take some kind of action that will push you forward. Sign up for a small business seminar. Register your dream URL. Sign up for a craft fair or startup meetup. Set a deadline with yourself (and maybe with a friend to hold you accountable). Just do something that will force yourself into action. With every action you take, you?ll be gaining confidence and momentum.

If you don?t try, you?ve already failed.

Most importantly, you need to change your mindset about trying and failing. Think about all the opportunities and possibilities you leave behind by not trying. Consider what you?re missing out on. By never trying, you?ve failed right from the start. Throughout the course of my career as an entrepreneur, I?ve kept the following simple mantra in mind? I know that I am not done failing ?I WILL fail again. I am NOT done succeeding ?I WILL succeed again. And most importantly, I am NOT done trying!

Need a little encouragement?

Here is a list of the Top 5 Most Successful People Who Have Failed. You may not all want to be an author, cartoonist or Billionaire TV Mogul but my point is that you can truly Have, Do or Be anything you want if you believe and can keep your thoughts in perspective!

  • Steven King, Author ? The first book by this author, the iconic thriller Carrie, received 30 rejections, finally causing King to give up and throw it in the trash. His wife fished it out and encouraged him to resubmit it, and the rest is history, with King now having hundreds of books published the distinction of being one of the best-selling authors of all time.
  • Charles Schultz, Cartoonist ? Schultz?s Peanuts comic strip has had enduring fame, yet this cartoonist had every cartoon he submitted rejected by his high school yearbook staff. Even after high school, Schultz didn?t have it easy, applying and being rejected for a position working with Walt Disney.
  • J.K. Rowling, Author ? Rowling may be rolling in a lot of Harry Potter dough today, but before she published the series of novels she was nearly penniless, severely depressed, divorced, trying to raise a child on her own while attending school and writing a novel. Rowling went from depending on welfare to survive to being one of the richest women in the world in a span of only five years through her hard work and determination.
  • Oprah Winfrey, Television Pioneer ? Most people know Oprah as one of the most iconic faces on TV as well as one of the richest and most successful women in the world. Oprah faced a hard road to get to that position, however, enduring a rough and often abusive childhood as well as numerous career setbacks including being fired from her job as a television reporter because she was ?unfit for tv.?
  • Walt Disney, Visionary ? Today Disney rakes in billions from merchandise, movies and theme parks around the world, but Walt Disney himself had a bit of a rough start. He was fired by a newspaper editor because, ?he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.? After that, Disney started a number of businesses that didn?t last too long and ended with bankruptcy and failure. He kept plugging along, however, and eventually found a recipe for success that worked.

Not everyone who?s on top today got there with success after success. More often than not, those who history best remembers were faced with numerous obstacles that forced them to work harder and show more determination than others. Next time you?re feeling down about your failures, keep these five famous people in mind and remind yourself that sometimes failure is just the first step towards success.
