New nonprofit puts college students to work | WestChesterBuzz.com

Cliff Peale reports:

What college student wouldn?t want a $15-an-hour job, asks Dave Dougherty.

Dougherty, the former chief executive officer at Convergys Corp., has formed a new nonprofit group to make that happen.

Called Education at Work, the venture will operate call centers for a client roster that already includes Macy?s and Cincinnati Bell.

Dougherty will pay college students starting at $9 per hour, plus tuition benefits up to $6,000 a year. Students must be taking at least one college class to qualify and the amount depends on their grade point average.

In short, he?s putting profits from the business into the tuition payments. He sees the potential for 5,000 students working in multiple call centers around Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky.

?That?s putting a meaningful dent in raising the education level in this community and the job skills level in this community,? said Dougherty, who headed the Cincinnati USA Partnership development group for a year ending in March 2012 after leaving Convergys in 2010.

The new company starts operations as an entire generation of college students is carrying crippling debt, now approaching $1 trillion nationally.

In Ohio, seniors graduating in 2010 carried an average $27,713 in debt, No. 7 in the country, while Kentucky students graduated with average debt of $19,375, ranking No. 43, according to the Project on Student Debt.

The strategy to hire college students to staff call centers has been tried before.

At Northern Kentucky University, both Delta Air Lines and Fidelity Investments opened call centers on the Highland Heights campus in the late 1990s, employing hundreds of students at their peak capacity.

But cutbacks in those industries and the national recession took their toll. The Delta call center closed in 2001 and the Fidelity call center closed in 2008.

Education at Work has opened a call center in Norwood, in a building and work stations donated by Cincinnati Bell. It took its first calls in mid-August and has more than 100 students already employed.

Helped by some funding from the SC Ministry Foundation, the College of Mount St. Joseph has invested $500,000.

The next call center will be somewhere near the Mount?s Delhi Township campus, hopefully in 2013, Dougherty said.

He has pitched the concept to other college presidents around the region, including O?dell Owens of Cincinnati State Technical & Community College.

Mount president Tony Aretz said the investment ?is another way we are trying to help our students afford a Mount education and lessen their student debt.?

Tuition at the Mount this year is $24,200. Very few students pay full tuition, with an average financial aid package of $17,400, according to the College Board.

For companies seeking call-center services, Dougherty called it a great vealue. He?s charging them $18 per hour.

?It?s still early, but we believe the quality of service by these college students will be superior,? said Tim White, another Convergys veteran who is vice president of business develoment. ?We?re basically starting with a smarter population. They know the technology and they?ve been able to get through the training faster.?

Students must go through four weeks of training and must work six months before they become eligible for tuition assistance.

For more information or to apply, students should visit www.education-at-work.org.

Live?from the Built Green Conference 2012: Session 2, Double ...

The Power of Synergy

Dave Porter of PorterWorks said we?ve all scared the crap out of each other enough. Take water for instance. Of all the water on the planet only 3% of it is potable, 2% of it is ice, and we are wasting so much of it.

What does green mean to you?
People spoke up with a lot of words ?
Sustainable
Replenishable
Healthy
Future Proofing
Durability
Smart Design
Sustainable
Adaptable

Dave says a lot of green building is missing the mark. He has seen a lot of 4 and 5 star Built Green homes, but they are not designed to last.

Words for Universal Design
Accessible
Simple
Adaptable
Simple solution to a complex problem
Universal design
Appropriate
Proportional (too many homes are too large and just for two people)

We spent some time evaluating the room we were in.

Universal design is not a hospital or hotel room that is ?accommodating?. They all look and smell like old nursing homes. He is talking about some spiffy places. European curbless shower. The tile does not have to scream hospital.

1 in 9 people have an issue with indoor air quality, lke asthma.

Why people buy green homes
Save money
Make money
Indoor air quality
They care a little bt about the world.
?in that order.

People are very interested in protecting their house. Indoor air quality and home security is something people will spend money on.
It is ridiculous that people will buy a green home to address indoor air quality issues but then bring in toxic furniture.

7,000 people become 65 every day.
2.7 million people in a wheelchair
6.8 million need some sort of mobility assistance
10 million blind or visually impaired, 1 million deaf and 10 million hard of hearing
NAHB has a program Certified Aging In Place. But Dave says it is about any age, there are 121,000 under the age of 15 in a wheelchair.

Someone you know is going to need Grace of the space

Intersection between green and universal design
A rambler ? smaller home, no stairs
Floor coverings ?
HVAC ? ductless, remote control, accessible filter
Light switches ? they should be lower
Outlets ? should be higher
Windows ? hand crank openings, good daylighting so no need to use lights
Materials ? concrete floors, wood
Appliances ? induction stoves since it inly heats metal and not people. Some people have sensory limitations. Central vacuum systems. Microwave drawer. Dish drawrs instead of front loaders. Front loading washing machine instead of top loader. Pull out shelves. More drawers.
Cabinets and hardware see above
Landscape and walkways ? pervious concrete would offer traction on a ramp. Drip irrigation Biophylia. raised garden beds.

Seven Principles of UD

- Equity Use
- Flexibility in Use
- Simple and intuitive to use
-Perceptible Info
-Tolerance of errors
-Low physical effort
-Size and space for approach and use

UD and Green Checklist

-Think family
-Think ahead
-Think green
-Do not think disability, wheelchairs, or ramps
-Do not think ADA, Fair Housing Act or other accessibility guidelines

Now the room has been brokern into sections and we are putting on our ?designer? hats to design a green and universally designed home.

Dave concluded with some photos of good universal design. Your job is to solve problems. Uncover problems then solve them.

This is a working post.

Top 5 Christmas Gifts for Moody Teenagers | Fatherhood Factor

Something happens to some kids when they hit their teens. They say it?s something to do with their hormones but all I know is that some teenagers have mood swings that can be hard to deal with. Take my word for it, I was one of those moody teenagers, and I remember my parents struggling with buying Christmas gifts for me and my brother. Every single year.

I just hit my twenties, so I thought I would write down this little list of ideas to help you during your research into what impresses a teenager at Christmas.

Music Gifts

Nearly all teenagers like popular music so a voucher could do for you, or if you are feeling really brave, buying an actual album would be a good safe bet. If you are going down the voucher route there are a number of different websites that can make your life easier.

Apple?s iTunes is the big daddy of music retailing and there are easy ways to buy gift vouchers from their website; you can get a voucher emailed to your intended recipient or you can print one off yourself, or you can even choose a predesigned card and voucher to be sent to your address. You can also buy films, applications and books in the same way. The same can be done through retailers like amazon and hmv, so shop around and see what deals are there to be found.

Car Breakdown Coverage

If the teenager you are spoiling has a car then find out if it?s covered for breakdown recovery. This is a great gift idea as most teens have very old cars that are more susceptible to break-downs.? If your teenager doesn?t have a car then what about a contribution to driving lessons or even a contribution to a car fund!

An Experience

This is getting to the more expensive end of the scale but you can get a driving experience for your moody teen in a Lamborghini for as little as $89. The only real restrictions are that they must be under 6?6? and not be over 252lbs, which should make it open to most teens, I hope!

You could also look at a flying lesson. These also start at about $77 for an hour and the age restriction is as low as 12 years old. Flying can really help confidence and give your moody teen some sense of achievement?plus, sunglasses are recommended all year round, so your teen can look cool too!

A Subscription

A subscription used to mean a copy of ?Just 17? delivered to your door for a year, however subscriptions have moved on and now you can buy a number of different services that will appeal to your teenager. The first big leap in subscriptions is mobile phone top ups and subscriptions. If you are a Vodafone subscriber you can add a certain amount each month to another account you are controlling. You can also top up data usage if your teenager has a tablet or dongle for wireless internet access. Anyone who gives more access to the internet is going to be held aloft like a God in any teenager?s eyes. If you have a moody teenager who is a console game player it is possible to pay for their online connection subscription, which allows them to play online games. Or you could look at buying a subscription to a film database, like LoveFilm or NetFlix, starting at $7 per month.

A Gadget or an Accessory

What about an iPod Shuffle for $52? Most teenagers will already have a phone and a laptop, so what about buying something to complement their gadgetry? You can buy phone cases and laptop covers, starting at $13 or you could buy some headphones for your moody teenager. If you really wanted to be helpful and see into the future, you could buy gadget insurance for you teenager, but I can imagine the teenagers face when on Christmas morning they open a card with an insurance document in it?.

Hopefully this article has given you some ideas of what to buy your moody teenager. They are growing so quickly and they cannot control some of their mood swings so forgive their mistakes and brighten their day as they try and deal with all those mixed emotions.

It?s tough to be a teen.

Kane County committee OKs 3 percent property tax hike

GENEVA ? The County Board soon could decide whether to put in writing an intention to collect more in property taxes next year ? and whether to leave it to newly elected board members to reduce that amount come spring.

Tuesday, the County Board Finance and Budget Committee recommended the full County Board approve a budget that calls for the county to increase its property tax levy by 3 percent, the maximum amount allowed by law this year.

Should such a tax levy increase ultimately be approved, it could increase the tax bill owed by county taxpayers owning a house with an assessed value of about $250,000 about $5 to $12 next year, with an average increase of about $7 a year, according to county finance officials.

However, while the budget, which must be enacted by November, would state the county?s spending and taxing intentions, the actual tax levy on which that budget is based will not be acted upon until spring.

So, members of the Finance Committee said they believe the current County Board should leave it to the next County Board ? which will be seated after the November elections ? to decide whether to leave the property tax levy alone or scale it back.

Finance Committee Chairman Jim Mitchell, R-North Aurora, said the next County Board will know more about the county?s financial footing than the current board does.

He noted the County Board is still waiting to learn how much Kane County will have collected in sales taxes and its portion of the state income tax.

?It means that [the County Board] will actually know what you?re levying for,? Mitchell told the committee.

Other committee members also backed the levy increase.

?All we?re doing is setting a budget,? said board member Cathy Hurlbut, R-Elgin. ?We can?t ask for more than what we budget.?

The levy increase will not be needed to fund raises for county employees, committee members said.

Instead, the Finance Committee backed a proposal to use the county?s general contingency fund to pay for a 2 percent increase for most of the county?s nonunion, nonelected employees and for raises specifically for the county?s assistant state?s attorneys and public defenders.

In all, those raises would total about $1.06 million that would come from money the county already has on hand, Mitchell said.

While stressing the levy increase will not be used to pay for raises, committee members did not state why the levy increase might be needed.

Mitchell said that will be discussed by the full County Board when it takes up the matter, perhaps as soon as Oct. 9.

That lack of specificity caused at least one committee member, Christina Castro, D-Elgin, to question the need to increase the levy at all.

?When I talk to constituents, they say they can?t even take another $5,? Castro said. ?I?m OK with using the money out of contingency to pay for these raises, but I?m totally opposed to raising the levy.?

There are 33 hours, 4 minutes remaining to comment on this story.

(AP) ? Most of the 32,360 fans at Comerica Park groaned when Jhonny Peralta hit a tailor-made double-play grounder that looked set to end the eighth inning.

Andy Dirks made them cheer.

Jhonny Peralta's grounder brought home the go-ahead run because Dirks' hard slide broke up a potential inning-ending double play in the eighth and the Detroit Tigers beat the Kansas City Royals 5-4 Wednesday night.

"I was just trying to break up the double play and try to get a piece of him any way I could to help us score that run," Dirks said. "That's just kind of the way you play baseball."

Detroit wound up alone in first place for the first time since before play on July 24 when the White Sox lost to Cleveland later.

Triple Crown candidate Miguel Cabrera was robbed of a tiebreaking homer in the fifth inning by Alex Gordon's catch above the left-field wall.

Detroit found a way to break through the eighth.

It appeared as if Kansas City was going to keep the score tied when Peralta hit a grounder to third baseman Mike Moustakas. Dirks, though, slid so late and hard that second baseman Irving Falu didn't attempt a throw, allowing pinch-runner Don Kelly to score what he said was most important run of his career.

"Peralta was slow getting out of the box, so that's an easy double play," Moustakas said. "I'm always going to go to second on that play, but Dirks did a heck of a job to break it up."

Dirks was swarmed by teammates in the dugout to celebrate the gritty, clean play he made.

"That's good, old-fashioned baseball," Tigers manager Jim Leyland said.

Delmon Young hit an infield single with one out in the eighth off Kelvin Herrera (4-3) and was replaced by Kelly, who stole second base and took third on Dirks' single.

Detroit's Alex Avila hit a two-run homer and Austin Jackson had a solo shot in the fourth inning to tie the game.

Cabrera, who went 0 for 4, started the day with the AL lead in batting average and RBIs and was one homer behind Texas' Josh Hamilton. Baseball hasn't had a player lead a league in all three categories since Boston's Carl Yastrzemski in 1967.

Cabrera was close to pulling into at least a temporary tie with Hamilton for homers, but Gordon prevented him from hitting his 43rd homer.

"It was hit so high that I had plenty of time to find the fence and get ready," Gordon said. "I thought I might have to climb the wall or at least jump, but at the end, I just had to put my glove up."

The Tigers have won six of nine games on their final 10-game homestand and 32 of their last 43 games at Comerica Park. They had, however, lost 11 straight one-run games since beating Toronto 3-2 on Aug. 23.

Kansas City has lost four straight ? three consecutive against Detroit ? after winning four in a row, including two against the White Sox.

"I love my team," Royals manager Ned Yost said. "We've played three games here, and we're 0-3, but we're in these games and we're not far from the point where we are going to be consistently winning these teams.

"No matter what has happened this year, we've gotten knocked down and gotten right back up. These guys fight every day, and they are going to do everything in their power to beat Detroit in these games."

Detroit starter Rick Porcello lasted just four innings, giving up four runs and seven hits.

"His velocity dropped and that was a red flag for me," Leyland said.

Luis Marte got two outs in the fifth and Al Alburquerque gave up only one hit over 2 1-3 innings. Joaquin Benoit (4-3) allowed one hit in the eighth. Jose Valverde closed the game for his 32nd save in 37 chances.

Royals starter Jeremy Guthrie allowed four runs on seven hits and two walks over seven innings.

Young doubled and Dirks singled to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead in the second.

Kansas City went ahead 3-1 in the third inning after Falu, David Lough and Billy Butler doubled. Jeff Francoeur's solo homer in the fourth inning gave the Royals a three-run lead.

NOTES: Detroit is sending Doug Fister (10-9) to the mound in its final scheduled home game Thursday afternoon against Kansas City and Luis Mendoza (8-9) before the Tigers close the regular season on the road against Minnesota and the Royals. ... Guthrie was 4-0 with a 1.75 ERA in his previous nine starts all of which were Kansas City wins. ... Porcello, who hadn't pitched since Sept. 16 because a rainout led to his previous scheduled start getting skipped, is 0-6 in his last eight outings. ... Yastrzemski told reporters in Boston on Wednesday that playing meaningful games down the stretch with help Cabrera's attempt to win the Triple Crown. "One thing that's going to help him is he's in a pennant race," Yastrzemski said. ... Falu matched a career high with three hits.

Yesterday by C. K. Kelly Martin | At Home With Books

Yesterday is a fantastic young adult novel combining dystopian, time travel, and 1980?s cultural elements. This is one of the most entertaining young adult novels that I?ve read all year!

Freya has just moved with her family from Australia after her father?s death in a gas explosion ? or at least that?s what everyone else believes has happened. But Freya has started having dreams of living with a different family, and of events that don?t match up at all with her current life. In her waking hours she is trying to adjust to the new school and friends, yet in some ways she feels detached from her life; her memories of friends and experiences in Australia being devoid of feeling and emotion, as if they happened to someone else.

Then one day on a school field trip to the city she sees a boy who seems eerily familiar, so she follows him just to see where he goes. Soon after that he starts showing up vividly in her dreams along with all of the other people who don?t play any role in Freya?s memories of Australia. Soon these other memories start making appearances in the daytime, and she thinks that the boy from the city, Garren, might be the key to recovering her true memories and finding out what is happening to her.

This story is one where it gives you a glimpse of the dystopian society in the beginning, and then suddenly shifts to Freya in 1985. And the mystery of the story is how she came to be a part of this new family, and why.

The pace ramps up when she meets Garren and then barrels through to the end, with the exception of one chapter in the middle in which we get a lot of background information. These facts are essential to the plot, and even though the method of accessing the information seems a little convenient for the plot, it doesn?t detract from the story.

Yesterday is a wonderfully exciting tale to read and I highly recommend it to fans of young adult dystopian fiction! In what has become a rarity for YA dystopian, Yesterday has a distinct ending (not a frustrating cliff-hanger), though I think it is clearly begging for a sequel (or two), because I would dearly love to find out more about Freya?s life and the future of her world.

Technology News: Apple Map VS Google Map - RightWorks

If you have not known it yet, Apple withdrew its support for Google applications as Google become their primary competition. With the ongoing comparison of the iOS line of operating systems against Android, Apple decided to remove all of its applications that are Google powered. These would have to include YouTube, and of course, the Google Map.

Now that the iPhone 5 has been released, it no longer bears the Google Maps as one of its applications. Apple now has its own innovative map to cater the same kind of assistance for finding locations and directions. However, knowing that both serve the same purpose, it can never be helped that there will always be comparisons. So, it is good to take both maps in closer look.

The Google Map has already been proven to work for years of usage by so many mobile map users. As compared to the Apple Map that has just been released along with the iPhone 5, things are still going to be under some tests. The same in purpose and feature, you can still cite the significant differences found in each maps.

Just recently, reports were made by so many iOS 6 users that their Apple map is inaccurate. These inaccuracies are pointing to London being found in Ontario, Canada and not in England. There were also reports that some buildings and bridges look distorted as opposed to how they should be. These are inaccuracies in addition to Google Map?s advantage over information provision. This is no surprise since Google has more to integrate with mapping.

It is reasonable to point out that the Apple map is still under the process of constant innovation. So, to ask if the use of this map is worth all the risks would be too early for anyone to do so.

Victim of Guatemalan civil war massacre wins asylum in U.S.

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - One of two known survivors of a notorious Guatemalan civil war massacre of 250 men, women and children in his small farming village has been granted political asylum to stay in the United States, his lawyer said on Monday.

Oscar Ramirez Casteneda, 33, who learned only last year that he had been kidnapped as a young boy by a Guatemalan army lieutenant during the 1982 bloodshed and raised by the man's family, was notified in a letter on Saturday that he had won asylum, attorney Scott Greathead said.

"Oscar is very, very grateful to get asylum, which means he can remain in the United States with his wife and their four children," Greathead said. "And if he hadn't gotten it, his prospects would have been very, very dangerous in Guatemala because he is so implicated in these cases against members of the Guatemalan military.

A U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services spokeswoman, Mariana Gitomer, declined to comment, citing the agency's policy against discussing asylum cases.

Casteneda received the letter granting him asylum one day after a former Guatemalan army commando accused of taking part in the massacre in the village of Dos Erres was extradited to the United States from Canada to face charges that he lied about his past to gain U.S. citizenship.

Jorge Sosa, 54, also known as Jorge Vinicio Sosa Orantes, was due to make an initial court appearance in U.S. District Court in Riverside, east of Los Angeles, later on Monday.

U.S. prosecutors, who have no jurisdiction in Guatemala, have not charged Sosa in connection with the massacre but say that if he is convicted he could be sent back to his home country to face charges there after serving his U.S. sentence.

Casteneda, now a restaurant manager in Framingham, Massachusetts, was assisting prosecutors in the case against Sosa and other members of a Guatemalan special forces unit known as the "Kaibiles" accused of taking part in the horrific events at Dos Erres, Greathead said.

Nearly all of the 250 people living in Dos Erres perished over three days in what is considered one of the worst atrocities of Guatemala's bloody, 36-year civil war.

Many of the victims were killed with a blow from a sledgehammer and dumped into a well, and women and girls were raped before they were murdered.

The Kaibiles unit had been dispatched to Dos Erres to find members of a guerrilla group that had ambushed a military convoy in November 1982, killing soldiers and taking their weapons.

Casteneda, who was 3 years of age at the time, is one of only two people believed to have survived, along with a 5-year-old boy who also was abducted by soldiers, Greathead said.

Casteneda's mother and eight siblings died in the attack, and his father, who was away from the village at the time, believed that his 3-year-old son had perished as well, until DNA tests established that his child had survived, leading to a reunion between the two men.

Chameleon launcher review

Following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Chameleon released its widget-heavy launcher for Android tablets last week. The unified look and feel of the widgets make for a great show, and the context-based triggers for home screen launches are cool, but how easy is it to get along with most of your apps tucked away in a dock?

Are Syrian shells raining biological agents down on Lebanese?

Lebanese living along the Syrian border are reporting rashes and other ailments. They suspect Syrian biological weapons are to blame, although weapons experts say that is unlikely.

Residents in Nourat al-Tahta and other villages under routine Syrian shellfire are complaining of unexplained symptoms may indicate artillery shells have been filled with a biological agent, but weapons experts discount the panicky assumptions.

Nazir Shrayteh, a doctor from the nearby village of Dousi, says he has received an unusually large number of patients from villages under shellfire in recent months complaining of rashes and diarrhea.

?Since May we have been getting these skin problems,? he says. ?I don?t know what it is, but I feel something odd is going on.?

Still, biological weapons experts say that the chances are remote that biological agents in Syrian artillery shells are the cause of the ailments. Although T-2 mycotoxins, a chemical produced by certain fungi and used as a biological weapon, are said to cause both symptoms, they are extremely toxic and potentially fatal, says Kelsey Gregg, a former biosecurity specialist with the Federation of American Scientists.

?Even at low doses, there would likely be different symptoms from an?aerosol,?including?eye and respiratory problems,? she says.

Furthermore, the ad hoc pattern of Syrian shellfire does not suggest a determined attempt to deliver biological agents. Ms. Gregg suspects the blame lies with poor sanitary conditions due to the stressful, overcrowded and abnormal circumstances in which the local residents and Syrian refugees are living.

The Nourat al-Tahta residents' case bears some similarity to a recent incident in Afghanistan, when a group of schoolgirls showing symptoms of poisoning raised fears that the Taliban was poisoning the drinking water supplies at several schools. The World Health Organization dismissed the symptoms as more likely a form of mass hysteria ? something that has happened many times in history, the Monitor reported.

How a toy train flew up into the sky

Ron Fugelseth's video documents Stanley the train's flight into the stratosphere and back.

By Alan Boyle

Sending your child's toy train into the stratosphere is no mean feat, but turning that train into an animated character requires a special blend of mechanical and computer-generated magic. Ron Fugelseth just happened to be the right magician for the job, as evidenced by the video that he and his 4-year-old son Jayden created.

Fugelseth's video traces the flight of his son's silver train, named Stanley, to an altitude of 18 miles or so. From that height, Stanley could see the curvature of the planet with the black sky of space above. The train's face reflects the wonder of the sight ? as well as his distress when the helium-filled balloon that got him that high bursts into bits. The animation is what transforms the tale of Jayden's toy train from your garden-variety balloon experiment into ... something wonderful.

"To me, the whole thing about this is the storytelling," Fugelseth, creative director for Oxygen Productions, told me today.

It all started months ago, when Fugelseth saw the video showing the balloon-borne flight of a Lego astronaut. "When I saw that Lego video, I thought, 'I should totally see if I could get Stanley to space,'" he said.

But Stanley is no cheap prop. To Jayden, the train is much more than a toy. "It's been his imaginary friend since he was 2," Fugelseth said. "It's like Linus and his blanket. This never would have popped into my head if it wasn't for that family member, that little white train."

So Fugelseth did his research and assembled the components for a stratospheric flight: a mail-order weather balloon, a palm-size HD video camera, an old cellphone capable of transmitting GPS location readings, a pocket warmer for heat, the necessary batteries, and a foam box for insulation and padding. (Check out the YouTube video description for other details, such as the procedure for letting the FAA know you're sending up a high-altitude balloon.)

Four weeks ago, Fugelseth and his son launched Stanley from Tracy, Calif. Then they waited for the balloon to pop and for the payload to come back down. When Fugelseth lost the cellphone signal, he worried over whether he'd ever be able to recover the precious cargo ? but the phone "magically started working again," he said. With a little assistance from Dad, Jayden found Stanley in a cornfield 27 miles from the launch site.

That's when the computer-generated magic kicked in: Fugelseth used video processing software to create the expressions on the toy train's face, just as he did two years earlier for a Jayden-and-Stanley video titled "A Train and His Boy." The trick isn't all that different from what Fugelseth does for his day job, but it's still a challenge. "It's not every day that a client asks for something like manipulating a face on a train," he joked.

A day in the life of 2-year-old Jayden and his favorite train, Stanley.

Fugelseth finished the 2?-minute video about Stanley's stratospheric voyage on Wednesday night, and since then it's gotten more than 55,000 views and a raft of positive reviews on YouTube. "If any video has ever deserved to go viral, this is it," one viewer wrote. "C-o-o-o-o-o-lest dad in the world. ... Dude, you gave me a warm feeling, looks like there's still hope for the human race after all."

But perhaps the most influential review came from Jayden and his 2-year-old sister. "They just went crazy," Fugelseth said. "They've watched it a million times now. ... One thing that Jayden said was, 'I wish I was a train, so I could go to space.'"

Be patient, Jayden. Maybe someday, you'll fly higher than Stanley ever could.

More near-space adventures
For a more grown-up tale, check out this "Now Is the Time" video presentation, recorded by a trio of space enthusiasts using a weather balloon, a platform made of plastic pipes and two GoPro cameras pointed at an iPhone. The main video is a tribute to spaceflight, but the "behind-the-scenes" video just might be more entertaining: It chronicles the three attempts to get the setup airborne, plus a backstory about the director's efforts to propose to his girlfriend using video from the stratosphere. (She said "yes.") Here are a few more tales of high-altitude high jinks:
